What Is an Idle Game? Idle, Incremental and Clicker Games Explained

A plain explanation of the genre: what idle games are, how they differ from incremental and clicker games, how earning while the app is closed works, and whether any of it is a waste of time.

On this page6 examples

An idle game is a game that keeps making progress while you are not playing it. You get a resource that accumulates over time, things to spend it on that make it accumulate faster, and a reset that trades your progress for a permanent multiplier. Your job is to decide where the accumulated resource goes, then leave. The theme on top (cookies, mines, breweries, the heat death of the universe) changes less than you would expect; what varies is how many meaningful decisions sit between the accumulation and the spending. The six games below show one example of each shape the genre takes.

Idle vs incremental vs clicker #

Clicker games reward tapping. You click, a number goes up, and the early game is about clicking enough to buy something that clicks for you. Cookie Clicker is the origin.

Incremental games are the broad category: any game whose content is successive layers of growth, each unlocked by exhausting the last. Antimatter Dimensions is the pure form. Not all are idle.

Idle games are the sub-set where progress continues without input. Most modern mobile games here are idle first and clicker second: tapping speeds things up, automation makes it unnecessary. When a listing says “idle tycoon”, it means a business idler with managers, prestige and a theme.

Offline idle games: how earning while the app is closed works #

Very few of these games actually run in the background. What happens instead is arithmetic: the game records when you closed it and, on reopening, calculates what your production would have made in the gap. That is why earnings arrive in a lump the moment you launch.

In our own game the rule is the one most business idlers use: a business with a manager keeps producing while the app is closed; you need a connection when you open the game, because events, leaderboards and cloud save sync at launch. Most free idle games work the same way, worth knowing before you rely on one during a flight.

Three reasons. Growth is legible: you can see the curve bend, with no ambiguity about whether you are getting better. The schedule fits real life, because a game designed around leaving is one you cannot fall behind in. And prestige keeps the ceiling moving.

A less flattering fourth: the same schedule works whether or not the game is any good. That is why monetisation matters so much here, and why our lists say where monetisation, rather than design, drives progression.

Are idle games a waste of time? #

Sometimes, and it depends what you wanted from it. If you are opening one forty times a day, chasing streaks and watching ads to keep a boost alive, you have picked the wrong one: a good idler saves your attention rather than asking for it. The good ones are built around earning while you are away, not around expiring timers and login calendars.

Played as designed, an idle game is one of the lowest-cost hobbies going: a few minutes, a few decisions, and it waits for you. That is not wasted time any more than a crossword is.

Where to go next #

If the genre appeals, the fastest way in is a modern mobile game. Our ranked best idle games list covers the field, and best incremental games goes deeper on the number-driven end. Our own entry is Idle Distiller Tycoon, the story-driven idle tycoon described above.

Two neighbouring lists are worth a look. For the tapping end of the family, our sister site ranks the best clicker games. For the management end, there is a ranked list of the best tycoon games.

About these examples

Nothing on this page is a ranking. The six games are examples, one per sub-type; swapping one for another well-known title would not change the taxonomy.

The categories are the ones players and developers use: clicker, business idler, incremental, idle RPG, mobile idle, and the story-driven idle tycoon. They overlap heavily, and almost every modern game borrows from two or more.

How these were compared: we reviewed official store listings, developer information, player reviews and genre conventions, and applied the same criteria to every game. We have not independently play-tested every title here.

FAQ

Questions people ask about idle games

What does idle mean in a game?

It means the game keeps making progress while you are not playing it. Production, income or experience accumulates on a timer rather than in response to input, and your job is to decide where the accumulated resource goes. Idle is the opposite of an action game in the most literal sense: doing nothing is a valid strategy for part of the time.

What is the difference between idle and incremental games?

Incremental is the broader term. It covers any game whose content is layers of growth, whether or not it runs on its own. Idle is the sub-set where progress continues without input. Cookie Clicker and Antimatter Dimensions are both incremental; Antimatter Dimensions is also idle, because it keeps producing while the tab sits in the background.

How long do you play an idle game for?

In sessions of two to ten minutes, several times a day, over weeks or months. That pattern is the design target rather than an accident: prestige resets, daily goals and events all assume you leave and come back. Games that punish a long absence are working against the genre, and reviews usually say so.
